Visitors, especially, campers and eco-tourists, frequent the Long Key State Park which has camp sites right on the beach. Many fish, kayak and camp at the 965-acre state park, dedicated in 1969. Travelers often stay at quaint Marathon vacation rentals. Long Key earned its name by early Spanish explorers who likened the shape of the island to a snake with its jaws open.
